         பொது மக்களின் உபயகத்திற்கென உள்ள நீர் நிலைகளில் உள்ள தண்ணீரை அசுத்தப்படுத்தி, பொது மக்களுக்கு பயன்படாமல் செய்வது குற்றமாகும்.    

      இதற்கு மூன்று மாதங்கள் வரை சிறைக்காவல் அல்லது அபராதம் அல்லது இரண்டும் சேர்த்து தண்டனையாக விதிக்கப்படும்

இ.த.ச 278

               மக்கள் வசிக்கின்ற அல்லது தொழில் புரிகின்ற அல்லது பொது பாதையாக உபயோகின்ற ஒர் இடத்தின் சுற்றுப்புறத்தையும், பொதுச் சுகாதரக்கேடு உண்டாக்கும் வகையில் அசுத்தப்படுத்துவது குற்றமாகும்.  

      இந்த குற்றத்திற்கு ஐந்து நூறு ருபாய் வரை அபராதம் விதிக்கப்படும்.

Section 277 in The Indian Penal Code

  Fouling water of public spring or reservoir.— 

  
    Whoever volun­tarily corrupts or fouls the water of any public spring or reser­voir, so as to render it less fit for the purpose for which it is ordinarily used, 

    shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three months, or with fine which may extend to five hundred rupees, or with both.

Section 278 in The Indian Penal Code

   Making atmosphere noxious to health.—

   
    Whoever voluntarily vitiates the atmosphere in any place so as to make it noxious to the health of persons in general dwelling or carrying on business in the neighbourhood or passing along a public way, 

   shall be punished with fine which may extend to five hundred rupees.
